We were looking for a quick meal before we flew out of town, and this place turned out to be great! The waiter was very helpful in making sure we had vegan choices. The food was authentic and delicious! Check it out if you are in town!

All typical Indian foods represented here. When we arrived the restaurant was almost empty and we were promptly seated. The Chai tea was served hot and tasty! Unfortunately that was the high point of my meal. The food was brought out piecemeal and without the accompanying dish. For example the chicken tandoori was deliver but without rice. The menu describes the dish as delivered on a bed of sizzling vegetables... Apparently that means it is sitting on a couple of pieces of shredded lettuce. The Lamb Vindaloo was unremarkable with none of the complex flavors and spices normally associated with this dish. Also rice was never delivered for this dish either. The waiter was pleasant but lacked enthusiasm. Granted it is hard to get motivated to serve diners but at the same time this is a sit down niche establishment, not a McDonalds and therefore I would expect committed staff. Overall, it was a mundane experience and I would recommend only coming for the supposedly exceptional lunch buffet as the dinner experience is clearly an afterthought of the management team.

The food was okay but not exceptional. Service was good. The restaurant interior design is too similar of the previous non-Indian restaurant theme to get me in the exotic mindset.

Excellent and authentic Indian food in this area is such a great piece of news! The location is a difficult one and I'm glad to see that every time I go there are more and more people. The daily lunch buffet is very fresh and of excellent quality. The naan (and Chai!) is always made fresh when you order and the large array of vegetarian options is also wonderful. Definitely a great place to have a warm, delicious lunch any day. You gotta love the tv in the corner playing old Bollywood movies too :)

Lunch buffet was a good deal at $9.99.Much to chose from. Some dishes were fairly spicy. All were delicious. Chef came out and chatted. Waiter was pleasant. Very nice folks. Chicken Tikka Masala was very tasty. Several meat and rice dishes to chose from. Clean restaurant with friendly staff. Will go back.

My husband and I were craving Indian food, and didn't want to drive downtown, so we popped into Taj Mahal about 7pm on a Thursday night. The place was completely empty when we walked in; the owner's daughter was sitting at a table on her phone; and the owner was sitting at the back on the restaurant on his computer. He motioned to us to come in and hollered at his daughter to seat us. She did not, so we just seated ourselves. The owner disappeared into the back, and another woman appeared to take our order. She was very shy and quiet; it was almost painful for her to talk to us. Meanwhile, the daughter continued to play on her phone at a nearby table. The restaurant was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Eventually, someone turned on the tv that was playing a Bollywood movie. We ordered the samosas to start. They came out piping hot and were drizzled with chutneys. They were huge and delicious! Crispy on the outside while filled with soft potatoes and peas on the inside! Some of the best samosas that I have ever had!! Second course was chicken tikka masala and saag paneer. The saag paneer was very green and spinach-y tasting....not a lot of other spices or cream. It definitely needed some spice! The chicken tikka masala was interesting.....it was not in the usual creamed tomato sauce that we are used to. It had tomatoes, onions, and chicken in a spiced tomato sauce. It was good, but different than what we normally get, and it needed more sauce! I'm not sure if this is due to the regional differences in Indian food or just this family's recipe. The entire time we were there, their daughter sat in the same spot, glued to her phone. She spoke to our server (her mother) a few times, who just stood at the back of the restaurant on her phone while we ate. The restaurant was very clean and decorated nicely with traditional items. It was spacious with plenty of room for groups. Next time, I'd like to try the lunch buffet, but only if the food is hot and plentiful.....

I came at lunch. The place was empty. They have a great lunch buffet. Every thing should have been fantastic, however the heater in the buffet table wasn't working. Everything was cold. If I'd known that it was going to be cold if have ordered from the menu. There was no notice about the fact that the buffet was cold, although they knew about it. The food was still good and I'll be back but I was disappointed.

We got here, and were the first customers seated for dinner at what I thought would be prime dinner time. I started out with the mango lassi, which was more juice like than I am used to but still very tasty. We placed our order of samosas, garlic naan, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, shrimp korma, and bainghan bharta. These are my staples and favorites, and I have to say that it was ok. I think I might have been spoiled with all the Indian food that I have eaten that this was off for me. I have never had chicken tikka masala they way they prepared it here. It was nothing like what I think of it looking or tasting like. In fact, much of the dishes looked and tasted almost pretty similar and wasn't much to distinguish between them. They had all of my favorite desserts on the menu but nothing I wanted to try because I was worried it wouldn't meet my expectations given what we had already finished.

Don't waste time going there. Bad service, bad food here. I arrived for buffet and when asked for more food I was told they can't make food for one customer. No kidding you don't get more customers because you have terrible service. Cooks were sitting and eating them self. Put the customers first not yourself.

I have been to many good Indian restaurants and this is my new FAVORITE! The food is authentic, well prepared, and delicious! Chicken samosa, chicken korma, and garlic naan

Very friendly service and delicious food. We're so pleased to have a great option for Indian food (with a lunch buffet 7 days per week) so close to home and hope this challenging location can be overcome. Welcome to the neighborhood!

This is an amazing Indian cuisine in Grand Rapids. The best in town with respect to Indian food. Service was good and the people where welcoming. Tandoori chicken and Naan bread were too goody and fresh. Given a chance I will go here for lunch always for Indian food.

Welp, I never thought I would leave a buffet hungry and NOT wanting to kill myself for overeating... but there's a first for everything. Went here with high hopes due to the 5 star reviews... and our entire group was disappointed. The "soupy" buffet containers required us to "fish" for chicken and veggies that were not refilled over the 45 minute period we were there. What little chicken we were able to snag was predominantly bones and ligaments, and the restaurant was freezing at 59 degrees. Head to Curry Kitchen or Bombay for a wayyyy better experience that will make you HATE yourself after for eating so much :)

Food was very good, but not excellent. Portions were quite small. I would definitely recommend to anyone. Felt like home cooking and delicious. I ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and a curry goat dish. None of them disappointed, but again, I could've easily eaten three entrée portions. Sounds like the lunch buffet may be a better deal. As sort of a side note, the garlic naan bread was a bit underwhelming. They clearly used canned garlic.

  • Pritika C.

Did they pay Yelp for the 4.5 stars that have been awarded them? The food was below average...the chicken tikka was dry and tough to eat, the Dal Makhani was probably a mix of all the daals they had cooked over the previous week, and the goat curry had absolutely no flavour at all. On top of that, they charged us for onions and chutney! I mean, which Indian restaurant charges you for the accompaniments? Anyway, to cut a long story short...do not go to Taj Mahal if you really want a taste of authentic Indian cuisine...there are better options available in our city.

I don't eat a lot of Indian food but this place has tasty butter chicken, garlic naan bread and samosas. The movie playing on the tv was very funny!

  • Benjamin A.

This place is legit. They had the best butter chicken I've ever had and probably the second best lamb vindaloo. Good table service from the owner as it seems like a family run operation.

We have frequented this restaurant about six times since it has opened-- obviously we are very impressed with it. The food is excellent, as are the very fair prices. The service is also top notch, with the owner most likely serving you and he always goes above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction. As the previous reviewer mentioned, this is a difficult location for businesses so please frequent to keep this wonderful restaurant in business!

Not bad, not great. It's better than Pal's down the street. Very typical, blah. Samosas were more hot than flavorful. Not too bland, but nothing special. Easy to get to, easy parking.

The Indian restaurant is fantastic! It is so good, I went with my family twice in about a week! We went for dinner both times, and over the course of the meals we tried: Butter Chicken, Tandori Chicken, Chicken Malai Tikka, Palak Paneer, Lamb Vindaloo, and a Chana Masala. We also had naan, garlic naan, and raita to go with our dishes. We opted to keep most of our dishes at fairly low spice levels with the exception of the vindaloo. All of the dishes were fantastic, and they did a great job accommodating the various spice requests. Also, all of the dishes are made from scratch upon ordering, so we were able to request slight changes when necessary (we didn't want potatoes in any of the dishes). I highly encourage anyone looking for Indian food in Grand Rapids to check out Taj Mahal. It looks fairly unassuming from the outside, but the food was delicious. On top of the food, the service was both efficient and very friendly! Help this awesome local business be successful in Grand Rapids!!!

We finally got a chance to get take out from the Taj Mahal. We got samosas, lamb korma, saag paneer and shrimp biryani. Everything was outstanding. Best Indian food I have had in GR. I highly recommend you stop by or get take out and try this for yourself!

For a small town like Grand Rapids this place is awesome - the food at the buffet is delicious but not too spicy. If you like spicy they can make it for you off the menu. We were a table of both Indians and non-Indians and everyone left really happy. Every single dish was really tasty. Similar to other reviewers I hope this place is visited since the location is hidden in a strip mall.
